FOREWORD
The search in the catalog allows to enter the database, called "OBJECTS" file, of the Swiss National Sound Archives (FN). The "OBJECTS" file contains the sound carrier and library stocks of the FN, as well as the full collection of historic sound carriers of the SWISS BROADCASTING CORPORATION (SSR) radio studios. The latter have been restored, copied, archived, and cataloged in the context of MEMORIAV, are visible when choosing an appropriate option in "Limit the results to - a project".
The cataloging of an object is divided into specific fields according to each object type. All "OBJECTS" available at the FN are listed in "Limit the results to - a format".
These fields can be linked together in order to construct logical information groups. All the fields together create the data record of an object. The search can therefore be carried out in each individual field, in a logical group of fields, or in the entire data record.
LANGUAGES
A good part of the documentation in the FN database has been translated into other languages (Italian, French, German, Romansh, English, etc.) and therefore the terms of the search can be entered in the desired language.
SEARCH METHOD
In order to begin a search, press ENTER or click on FIND.
Find all the following words...
- one or more COMPLETE words in any order
- one or more numbers
- COMPLETE words and numbers in any order
When multiple words or numbers are entered, the logical operator used between all terms is AND.
The search for terms can be carried:
- ANYWHERE IN A DOCUMENT
The search for the sequence of terms will be extended to all fields of an object's data record.
- IN A SINGLE FIELD
The search for the sequence of terms will be confined to an individual field of an object's data record.
- IN A LOGICAL GROUP OF FIELDS
The search for the sequence of terms will be confined to a group of related fields within an object's data record.
Some examples of logical group of fields for a sound carrier:
1) Work title, Author, Duration, Track
2) Performer, Activity of the performer, Musical instrument or Voice, Work title
3) Record label, Ordering number
The results can be limited to a specific format (see options in the "Limit to - a format" combo box) and/or to a specific project (see options in the "Limit to - a project" combo box). When no limit is selected, the results will default to all formats across all projects.
