Summary A la mort de Ramuz, l'écrivain Manuel Sorge le décrit comme le "sale vieux poseur de faux vigneron esthétouillard et théâtral qui m'empêche de vivre depuis toujours". Depuis qu'il tente d'écrire, Sorge est en effet confiné dans l'ombre de Ramuz, son aîné de trente-cinq ans, écrivain reconnu et novateur. Alors que contrairement à son rival il a presque tout pour être heureux, maison, femmes, argent, aisance en société et auprès des bourgeois, le héros de Incarnata (comme dans la phrase de Mozart - "Incarnata est musica" - jalousé par Salieri), se laisse ronger par la jalousie. Ce discours d'un raté obsédé par un grand est aussi celui de sa dégringolade. Jusqu'à ce qu'il tombe passionnément amoureux d'une femme affreusement laide mais à l'âme rayonnante. Chessex (Goncourt 1973 pour L'Ogre) aborde ici un thème difficile et souvent tabou pour les écrivains, qui ne sauraient être fiers de ce sentiment bas et dévorant, mais aussi très humain, qu'incarne la jalousie qu'ils éprouvent les uns pour les autres.
