International Year of Sound 2020+

International Year of Sound 2020+

The International Year of Sound is a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences and technologies for all in society. It consists of coordinated activities on regional, national, and international levels, which aim to stimulate the understanding throughout the world of the important role that sound plays in all aspects of our society.

The Swiss National Sound Archives participate in this initiative with a reflection on the thin line that occurs between an analog audio signal and its digital counterpart. Initially we had planned an event at our premises, with the technical contribution of Musicdoor hifi Sagl and divided into two parts: a technical part to lay the foundations and an artistic part to explain the topics of the technical part with musical examples captured on different types of sound carriers.

The event was aimed at the general public, with the goal of better learning, better listening and a better sound. The inclusion of the technical part was intended to inform but also to bring audiophiles and ordinary listeners closer together to let them discover strong and pleasant emotions in sound. We wanted to give the audience the opportunity to listen to various high quality sound recordings, both analog and digital, but also trying to encourage them to search for the limits, by understanding some lesser knows aspects of the functioning of our hearing system.

Then came all the pandemic problems that we know... we have therefore decided to give up the onsite event and turn it into something equally stimulating, in virtual. Stay tuned on this page.
